Design and Technology Overview

At Whoberley Hall Primary School, Design and Technology is an important part of the curriculum because it develops children into innovative, creative and reflective thinkers who can use their knowledge and skills to solve real-world problems. Through the design, make and evaluate process, pupils learn to explore ideas, take risks, test solutions and evaluate their work, building confidence, resilience and independence.

By studying the work of engineers, designers, chefs and architects, children gain an understanding of how design and technology shapes the world around them and are inspired to see the possibilities for their own futures. They develop practical skills and subject-specific knowledge through designing and creating products with a real purpose, while revisiting key concepts over time to ensure sustained progress.

Design and Technology also provides an inclusive and engaging opportunity for children from all backgrounds, with a wide range of strengths, needs and learning styles, including neurodiverse pupils, to express their creativity through hands-on experiences and practical problem-solving. By tackling meaningful challenges that are relevant to their lives, children learn that their ideas have value and that their skills, imagination and determination can make a positive difference to the world. Ultimately, we aim to foster high aspirations, helping pupils to see themselves as the inventors, designers, engineers and problem-solvers of the future.
